Neither King's nor Queen's,
nor Royal Marines,
But 28th, Old Braggs:
Brass before and Brass behind,
Never feared a foe of any kind;
Shoulder Arms!
An unrecorded commanding officer of
the 28th. |
Membership
Full membership of the 28th is open to anyone, male or female of 18 or upwards and junior membership is open to anyone of 14 to 18 under certain circumstances. People who wish to join and operate as a family are also welcome. Due to our commitment to living history which means
working close up to the public, we do not have female soldiers however there are plenty of roles for women since in this period families tended to follow their menfolk around the country and sometimes even overseas. There were also sutlers, regimental agents and various other civilians both male and female ready to sell the soldiers anything from a mug of ale to an officers commission.
In addition to the roles above we are looking for young lads who already play, or would like to learn to play, drum, fife or bugle. Help can be given towards obtaining the correct instrument by the group.
If wishing to join as a soldier you would be expected to learn the drills and demeanour of the period and obtain the correct uniform and equipment with help from the group. Some items can be lent so that you can get a taste of what it's like to be a Georgian soldier before spending a large amount. If applying for full membership you would also have to apply for a shotgun and black powder licence from your local police force to enable you to use a period flintlock firearm ( Brown Bess ).

What we do
In a typical year we will attend about one event every two months and occasionally two per month. Some of the events would be our own small ones and some would be large major events together with other regiments including cavalry and artillery units. We will also usually organise at least one event abroad per year in Spain, France or Belgium. Through the Winter months drill sessions are organised to enable us to teach new recruits and to keep our skills up to date.
Hiring Us
The 28th is available for hire at suitable events. We are a non profit society but we charge a fee designed to pay our members travel and food costs. And to enable us to renew and update our equipment etc. The amount of fee charged depends on what you want us to do and the number of soldiers and civilians you need. We can supply a fully tented encampment with soldiers and their wives and children. Or just a small detachment of soldiers for that special event.
